Chinon

Prehistorically one of the oldest settlements in France, the city was made famous by Joan of Arc, who, in this very castle, vowed to the king she would drive the English from the land.

All that remains from this formerly giant castle are the impressive ruins visible above the Vienne, parts of which were renovated at great expense during the last few years.

However, Chinon was not only known as a royal residence, but also as the birthplace of François Rabelais, the great French satirist and famous Renaissance poet, physician and scientist. Chinon now has 8000 inhabitants and has given its name to one of the best French red wines.

Anché

Situated on the left banks of the Vienne, with app. 400 inhabitants, Anché is an idyllic wine growing village only 5 minutes away from Chinon.

The church dates back to the 8th century and “Château des Brétignolles” , now in private ownership, originates from the 15th century.
